Changes to UK Government policy on immigration for UK post study visa

Since July 2010 changes have been introduced for those international citizens applying for a post study work visa in the UK. Similar to the immigration system currently in place in Australia, citizens will now have to obtain a certain amount of points as part of a new points based system in order to be granted a Tier 1 post study work visa.

If you are a citizen from outside the European Union or Switzerland you will need to submit an application to UK work permit consultants in order to stay in the country. As part of the points based system, immigration authorities will look at areas such as your command of the English language and your immigration status. In addition, as part of your application process you will need to prove to the immigration authorities that you have financial funding available in order to support yourself while looking for work in the UK.

Although you do not need to have a job secured immediately after you finish college or university you can stay in the UK for up to two years on a post study work permit. However in order to meet the required 95 points, you also need to have completed a particular type of qualification as some courses cannot be considered under the points based system. If you are concerned about the type of study you have been doing, contact the immigration consultants as soon as possible or call in to speak to a welfare officer at your university or college.

Just as you do not necessarily need to prove you have a job or sponsorship lined up, you are not restricted on the type of work you can do in the two years you stay in the UK after you complete your study. The UK Visa application must only be completed once you have obtained your application, and within twelve months of this date. In this respect, if you are still studying at present you should wait until you graduate until submitting your application for a post study work visa. However, it will do no harm to your application if you start getting your paperwork prepared in time for the time when you finish your course. Likewise this will also give you enough time to save up some money to prove that you will be able to support yourself while looking for work.

If you fail to submit the correct supporting documents or complete a section of the application form correctly then you risk your application being rejected. If this happens you will not be able to reclaim the additional fee you will pay upon submitting your forms. It is best to seek help and advice now if you are unsure about anything.
