How can I get a postgraduate visa in the UK?
If you have completed a bachelor degree, postgraduate course or Higher National Diploma you will need to apply for a post study work visa to stay in the UK. The UK is a vibrant multicultural country, however in order to work here you need to apply to the immigration authorities within twelve months of obtaining your qualification.
Of course you need to actually have obtained your qualification before applying for a postgraduate visa, but it will do no harm in thinking about your application now if you are still studying. There may be a few areas you will need to prepare for such as financial support as you will need to show supporting evidence to the UK work permit consultants that you will be able to support yourself while looking for work in the UK. The type of qualification you obtain may also influence the outcome of your application. For example, this visa has only really been designed for those who have studied postgraduate, undergraduate and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs). Other qualifications may not entitle you to apply for a postgraduate UK visa. If you would like any further information on whether your course will be eligible under the points based system or not, speak to an advisor at your university or college as soon as possible. Alternatively you may wish to contact the UK Border Agency directly to discuss any issues you may have in more detail.
Before filling out the supporting application form and paperwork you need to be sure you have enough points on the new immigration law system. For example, in order to apply for a Tier 1 post study work visa you need to obtain 95 points on the new points based immigration system. This is assessed by taking a look at some of the skills and attributes you already possess. If you speak English and have money to support yourself while looking for work, you will be rewarded 20 points. Your place of study and type of qualification could then present you with a further 75 points, taking you up to your required 95 points. If, for whatever reason you fail to achieve a minimum of 95 points, it will be unlikely your application for a work permit will be successful.
In support of this you will need to supply documentation from your place of study to verify your qualifications and proof you have some money saved. In addition you will also have a pay a fee of £315 and this amount will not be returned if your application is unsuccessful.
Not all international students will need to apply for this visa however. If you are from an EU country including Switzerland you can stay on to find work in the UK. If you are a resident of another country you will need to apply following the steps already outlined above.
