Tier 1 (Investor)

The Tier 1 (investor) category is designed to allow high net worth individuals make a substantial financial investment in the United Kingdom.

Who can apply as an investor?

You do not need a job offer to apply under the investor category. When you apply you are awarded points based on your ability to invest £1,000,000 in the United Kingdom.

To qualify for a Tier 1 (Investor) visa you must score 75 points as follows:

• For an initial application you must have access to £1,000,000 that is disposable and in a financial institution, or £2,000,000 in personal assets and £1,000,000 in a loan
• For an extension application you must already have £1,000,000 in the UK of which you must have invested £750,000 within three months, engaged in business activity and created at least two full time new jobs.

You do not need to score points for English or maintenance.

TIER 1 VISA, INVESTOR VISA

A tier 1 visa, investor visa is for those wishing to invest heavily in the UK economy and make the country their home. The investment they make must be of benefit to the UK economy for the tier 1 visa, investor visa to be granted. They are not required to engage in the pursuit of business.

The tier 1 visa, investor visa is valid for an initial period of three years which allows a period for the applicant to indentify areas of investment via market research. After the three year period is over, the tier 1 visa, investor visa may be extended, provided certain requirements are fulfilled.

To apply for a tier 1 visa, investor visa, applicants must personally have at least £1 million stored in a regulated financial institution. This money must be disposable within the United Kingdom. Alternatively, applicants for the tier 1 visa, investor visa may have more than £2 million of personal assets – minus any liabilities – of which £1 million is under their personal control and held by a regulated financial institution.

The tier 1 visa, investor visa does not require the applicant to demonstrate English language abilities as, due to their wealth, they are considered unlikely candidates for entering the UK job market. For the same reason, applicants for the tier 1 visa, investor visa do not need to meet any maintenance fund requirements. Applicants for the tier 1 visa, investor visa may choose to work in the UK but they are not required to do so.

Once the applicant has been granted the tier 1 visa, investor visa and spent three years conducting research and identifying investment opportunities, they may be granted Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK. This may be extended to their dependants.

Indefinite Leave to Remain allows persons to live permanently in the UK and travel in and out of the country without the need for a visa. Those eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain are sometimes able to sponsor their relatives into the UK. They may also be able to apply for citizenship of the UK.

Like other tier 1 visas such as the tier 1 entrepreneur visas, Applying for the tier 1 visa, investor visa requires that applicants obtain 75 points on the UK visa points system. The full 75 points will be given to applicants who meet any one of the financial requirements already mentioned.
