The Home Office UK Border Agency is responsible for processing UK Visa Applications of which there are many different types.  For visitors wishing to attend the London 2012 Olympic and ParaOlympic Games, there is a new type of visa which is generally for 6 months.  The usual conditions about non European visitors apply.  Nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland do not need a visa to visit the UK.   Non EEA nationals will need to complete a UK Visa Application and be granted a visitor visa prior to leaving their home country.  The British embassies and consulates in those countries will be able assist with help and advice, or the applicant can contact one of the many registered companies who specialise in processing UK Visa Applications.  The applicant should be absolutely sure that the company is authorised by the UK government to provide this service.

For nationals of non EEA countries who wish to work and study in the UK there are a number of other types of visas.  There are five categories of student visa and it is important that the correct UK Visa Application is completed and submitted to the authorities for consideration.  The Tier 4 (General) visa is for people over 16 years of age who wish to study in the UK.  If the applicant is between 4 and 17 years of age, they will need to apply under the category Tier 4 (Child) visa and is specifically designed for those who wish to attend a long course.  Adults who wish to attend a short course should submit a UK Visa Application as a student visitor; children who wish to study a short course should complete the form for a child visitor.  If these types of visas are granted, the individual is not permitted to work in the UK. Finally in the overall category for student visas, prospective student visas are for individuals who wish to finalise arrangements for study in the UK.

Individuals wishing to remain in the UK to study after their initial period of study under a student visa can apply for a Post Study Work Visa, a Post Study Visa or a Postgraduate Visa.  These must be applied for and granted prior to the end of the course.  For individuals who wish to make the UK their home, become more settled and be permitted to work there are a number of options including applying for work to companies who have or are willing to apply for a Sponsor Licence.  Permanent residence can be attained through the process of the “indefinite leave to remain” (ILR Visa).  If the UK Visa Application for this final category has been granted, the applicant is able to live and work freely in the UK and has the same rights and privileges as a British national.

Whatever reason an individual wishes to visit, study or work in the UK, the correct UK Visa Application must be made and the correct documentation presented.  If the applicant is a non EEA national, a visa will be mandatory.
