UK Visa

A UK visa is a stamp or document that shows that a person has authorization to legally enter the UK. On rare occasions, immigration officials may prevent some people entering the country even if they are in possession of a valid UK visa. Refusal may occur when the UK visa was obtained using false information, or if the applicant withheld important information when applying for the UK visa.

When the holder of a UK visa arrives in the country they may be asked questions by an Immigration Officer. For this reason it is important to take relevant documents that provide support of the right to a UK visa. These may include proof of pre-booked transport for the return journey or evidence of the funds available for the trip.

Any person from a country that is a member of the EU does not need a UK visa to enter the UK or any of the other EU countries. This is made possible thanks to the Schengen Visa which was established in the Schengen Agreement of 1985. Signatories to the agreement decided that one visa should be established that allowed EU citizens to travel between member states without needing a UK visa.

Citizens from some other non-EU countries may also enter Britain without needing a UK visa. Those that definitely do need a valid UK visa include people who are considered stateless, those who do no hold a national travel document identifying them as a citizen of an issuing country, and those who hold a passport for a country not recognised by the UK visa issuing authorities.

A UK visa doesn’t give the holder the same rights as a UK citizen and a UK visa may be revoked in some circumstances. The main purpose of a UK visa is so that the government can reassure itself of the identity and intentions of a potential visitor before they enter the country.

A UK visa can be issued in a variety of forms. A single-entry UK visa allows a holder to enter the UK, but it is cancelled once they leave. A double-entry UK visa allows a holder to leave and re-enter the UK before it is cancelled. A multiple-entry UK visa allows the holder to enter and leave the UK a number of times. Once a UK visa has been issued, it will usually have to be made use of within a specified period of time.
