Working in the UK
There are a number of different categories available to migrants wishing to live and work in the UK. Most of these are now governed by the points-based system which is designed to provide a straight-forward decision making process while offering the Government a means of controlling the levels of immigration by amending the points system from time to time.
Currently, there are three Tiers specifically aimed at those wishing to work in the UK:
-
Tier 1 – Previously known as the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme or HSMP, Tier 1 is limited each year to just 1000 ‘exceptional talented individuals’ plus an unlimited number of investors, entrepreneurs and prospective entrepreneurs. In addition, graduates from recognised UK universities can apply for a Tier 1 (Post-study work) visa up to 5th April 2012.
-
Tier 2 – this is for skilled workers who have a prospective employer in the UK who is willing to sponsor them to carry out a permanent job here in the UK. The job must feature on the UKBA’s Graduate Occupation list or on the Tier 2 shortage occupation list .
-
Tier 5 – this is for skilled workers who have a prospective employer in the UK who is willing to sponsor them to carry out certain types of temporary work here in the UK.
