If you have decided to settle in the UK permanently and received your visa for indefinite leave to remain (ILR Visa), you will be entitled to all the advantages of a native British citizen. To obtain an ILR Visa you must have lived in the UK on another type of visa for at least four years. If you have been in the UK on a Marriage Visa or De Facto visa, you will need to have been settled for two years before you can apply for an ILR Visa. If you are in the UK on a Tier 4 Student Visa, you will not be able to apply for an ILR Visa.
Living and working in the UK and getting to know the people is one of the benefits of travel and will help you understand the cultural differences between the British and your own country. Deciding to move permanently to another country is not a decision to be taken lightly, and as you progress through the application process for obtaining an ILR Visa you will become more aware of this. Illegal immigrants are frowned upon on in the UK, so do not be tempted to outstay your current visa or you could be deported. Nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA) do not require ILR Visas as there are reciprocal arrangements between Britain and member countries of the EEA for freedom of movement.
Once you have your ILR Visa you will be able to apply for your social security number which will be required by your employer before you can start work. If you have been in the UK on another type of work visa, you may already have a social security number, and this will remain the same.
You will generally require a good level of English and a working knowledge of life in the UK before you can be considered for an ILR Visa, and if you have already been in the country for four years on another type of visa, you will have achieved this. An ILR Visa is also known as permanently settled and once you have become a resident and settled in the UK, you will feel more comfortable if you make an effort to integrate into the British community. If you ultimately decide to leave the UK, you will relinquish your ILR Visa if you remain outside the UK for more than two years. There may be circumstances when this does not apply, but if you find yourself in this situation, you should check with the UK Borders Agency as to the situation.
Britain welcomes foreign nationals to its shores, but there are regulations to be followed if you are a non EEA national, and procedures to be followed if you are to receive an ILR Visa. There are separate UK Visa Application forms for families, migrants who are already working in the UK, for students and other categories. You should ensure that you complete the correct form when applying for an ILR Visa to save time and money.
